What You Get for ... $1,750,000

LANDGROVE, VT.
WHAT: A house with five bedrooms and four bathrooms on 121 acres
HOW MUCH: $1,750,000
SIZE: 4,100 square feet
PRICE PER SQUARE FOOT: $427
SETTING: This house is on a quiet expanse of forest and meadow near the Green Mountain National Forest in southwestern Vermont. The area is rural, with the occasional house nestled in the trees, most on lots of at least four acres. Trails for hiking and biking are abundant, as are places to ski — Mount Snow, Stratton and Bromley are all nearby. Landgrove has a community center and a tennis club, and a close-knit population of 158. The minutes of the town’s board of selectmen are kept using first names. Weston, a town about five miles away, is home to the Weston Playhouse Theater Company and the Vermont Country Store, a self-styled throwback that stocks penny candy and apple-cider vinegar tonic, among many other items.
INDOORS: The chalet-style house was built in 1997 with exterior walls made of locally sourced spruce. It has southern and western views of the mountains and forest. Common areas are part of an open, circular floor plan with wide-plank wood floors and ceiling beams, and plenty of windows on all sides. A wide Rumford fieldstone fireplace faces the living area; two sets of French doors open to a deck that wraps around the entire house. In the kitchen, stainless-steel appliances contrast with handmade chestnut cabinets and black marble countertops.
The main-level master suite is an addition built in 2008, set off from the common areas by a long gallery-like hallway. In addition to a bedroom, there’s an en-suite bathroom and sitting room. Two more bedrooms are upstairs, including a suite that opens to a private deck. The remaining bedrooms are downstairs, on the walkout lower level, which opens to the property’s pond.
Above the three-car garage is what the owners call the summer living room, with an additional deck. Also on the property is a 36-by-36-foot post-and-beam barn with a loft, built in 2010.
OUTDOOR SPACE: The house sits at the top of the meadow on 20 cleared acres, with expansive views. The rest of the land is wooded.
